the Fins and the Twins
Começemos pelo processo de fabrico.
O shape, laminar e polimento de cada set é feito manualmente por uma só pessoa. Uma vez que se tratam dos primeiros sets e tendo em conta o processo de fabrico, é de esperar pequenas imperfeições que em nada afectam o desempenho das quilhas. Como todos os trabalhos manuais, o objectivo é alcançar um patamar de excelência que só o tempo e experiência o proporcionarão.
Já que decidi fabricar quilhas pensei: "Porque não experimentar um template meu?". E foi o que fiz. Parti de dois templates que suscitaram o meu interesse, modelo do Joel Tudor e o Rocket, e fiz um mix de ambos criando assim uma quilha com as seguintes características:
- Base: 185mm (quanto maior a base, maior a aceleração) ;
- Profundidade: 120mm (maior profundidade proporciona melhor estabilidade) ;
- Rake: 35mm (amplia ou reduz as curvas das manobras) ;
- Cant: 6º (aumenta ou diminuí a manobrabilidade) .

Lets start with the fabrication method.
The shape, laminating and polishing of each set is made manually by only one person. Since they're the first bunch and having the fabrication method into account, little imperfections are expected which in nothing affect the performance of the fins. As all manual work, the goal is to achieve a level of excellency that only time and experience will provide.
Since I decided to make fins I though: "Why don't I try my own template?". And that's what I did. I started of from two templates that roused my interest, the Joel Tudor model and the Rocket, and made a mix of both thus creating a fin with the following characteristics:
- Base: 185mm / 7.2'' (the bigger the base, the more acceleration) ;
- Depth: 120mm / 4.7'' (more depth provides better stability) ;
- Rake: 35mm / 1.3'' (extends or tightens the arcs of maneuvers) ;
- Cant: 6º (increases or decreases maneuverability) .
Em relação ao foil, decidi também fazer uma experiência e optei por um foil exterior com linhas clássicas e um ligeiro toque de performance moderna. Mantive o foil interior plano de modo a tornar a velocidade mais controlável, e para estas serem surfaveis em ondas de maiores dimensões. E o encaixe é compatível com copos Lokbox.
Depois de ver as quilhas do Kevin Cunningham, decidi percorrer as nossas praias em busca de fios de pesca para incorporar no logo. Foi uma parte do processo que gostei bastante pois pude contribuir para a limpeza das nossas praias e ao mesmo tempo encontrei material de trabalho.
E por último, a laminação é feita com Entropy SuperSap, uma resina ecológica e bastante flexível face a outras semelhantes. A resina é um dos materiais que mais poluí na construção de pranchas e quilhas, e ao utilizar a Entropy estou a reduzir esse impacto ambiental. Em fase de testes não notei qualquer diferença entre esta e uma normal de poliester, a flexibilidade é de facto impressionante. Assim a Entropy tornou-se na minha resina de eleição.
As quilhas foram testadas em praias com fundos de areia, em ondas a variar entre os 0,5m e os 1,5m, sendo que nas ondas de menores dimensões foi notado um melhor desempenho quando as mesmas eram colocadas mais junto ao tail.
Gostei tanto do resultado final e da performance deste set que decidi fazer mais 3 sets que estão prontos para entrega.
Se houver algum set que gostassem de ter em bambu, estou disponível para fazer encomendas costumizadas com o template, foil, cant (0,2,4,6 ou 8º) da vossa eleição, mas para já só com encaixes compatíveis com Lokbox.
E também faço glass-ons para serem laminadas com resina de epoxy ou poliester.

Talking about the foil, I also decided to make an experiment and I chose an exterior foil with classic lines and a light touch of modern performance. I kept the inside foil flat making speed more controllable, and to suit bigger waves. And the tabs are compatible with Lokbox boxes.
After seeing Kevin Cunningham's fins, I decided to check out our beaches in search of fishing lines to incorporate in the logo. It was a part of the process that I really enjoyed because I could contribute to the cleanliness of our local spots and at the same time I found work material.
And last but not least, the lamination is made with Entropy SuperSap, an ecological resin and quite flexible comparing to others similar to it. The resin is one of the materials that more pollutes in surfboard and fin production, and by using Entropy I'm reducing this environmental impact. In a test phase I didn't notice any difference between it and a normal polyester one, the flexibility is in fact impressive. So Entropy definitely became my resin of choice.
The fins were tested at beach-breaks, with waves that varied between 0,5m/1.5foot and 1,5m/5foot, and it was noticeable that in small waves they performed better when placing them more near to the tail.
I liked the final result and performance so much that I decided to make 3 more sets that are ready for delivery.
If there's a set that you would like to have in bamboo, I'm available to make custom orders with the template, foil and cant (0,2,4,6 and 8º) of your choosing, but for now only with tabs compatible with Lokbox.
And I also make glass-ons to be laminated with epoxy resin resin or polyester.

It’s a natural material that renews itself quickly since it thrives in various climates, grows at an amazing rate (up to 39''/99cm a day), only takes 5 years to grow and once harvested it just sends up another shoot.
Performance wise:
Fins made out of bamboo wood are about 50% lighter than high performance fins and have a lively flex memory that competes with fins mad of fiberglass. It’s flexibility provides quick transitions between turns, through immediate acelaration.

Introduções / Introductions
A minha vida como surfista começou inesperadamente há 10 anos atrás. Apesar da minha curiosidade pelo surf mesmo antes de o experimentar, não antevi o quanto me iria influenciar e moldar a minha forma de viver e pensar. De facto, o surf não é somente um desporto... É um estilo de vida, uma maneira de estar que aos poucos se instala em nós.
My life as a surfer began unexpectedly 10 years ago. Despite my curiosity for surf even before I tried it, I did not foresee how much it would influence and mold my way of living and thinking. In fact, surf is not a mere sport... It's a way of life, a manner of being that slowly gets installed.
Tal como na vida, no surf existe também uma procura de identidade, da nossa individualidade. Nessa minha jornada revi-me em surfistas como Dave Rastovich e Chris Del Moro, e no trabalho de artistas como Neal Purchase Jnr, Ryan Lovelace, Kevin Cunningham, Michael Torres e Nico da Wavegliders. Daqui nasceu o meu interesse por shapes diferentes, fabrico manual, preocupação ambiental e também o desejo de surfar com algo que fosse eu próprio a criar. Comecei por fazer um set de quilhas já que era uma escala com a qual estava habituado a trabalhar uma vez que estudei Design (e confesso, por achar ser relativamente fácil... como me enganei). Apaixonei-me tanto pelo processo como por aquilo que criei e daí desenvolvi a Deep Blue Barrel.
Just like life, in surf there's also a search for identity, our own individuality. On that journey I identified myself with surfers like Dave Rastovich and Chris Del Moro, and on the work of artists such as Neal Purchase Jnr, Ryan Lovelace, Kevin Cunningham, Michael Torres and Nico from Wavegliders. It was from here that I developed an interest for different shapes, hand made products, environmental concern and also a desire to surf with something that I had created myself. I started off by making a set of fins since it was a scale I was already familiar with because I studied Design (and I confess, for thinking it would be relatively easy... how I was wrong). I fell in love both for the process and for my creation and developed Deep Blue Barrel.
As quilhas são feitas a partir de contraplacado de bambu, resinas ecológicas e residuos plásticos encontrados pela nossa costa. Todos os excessos são reaproveitados ou para integrar parte das quilhas ou para futuras ideias e projectos que possam vir a surgir, tentando assim criar um produto assente numa consciência ambiental.
The fins are made from bamboo plywood, eco resins and plastic residues found along our coastline. Every excess is reused either to be an integrated part of the fins or for future ideas and projects that may pop up, trying by doing so to create a product based on an environmental consciousness.
